Quarterback Austin Reed attends the 2016 Tampa Bay Area Quarterback Challenge

This past weekend St. Augustine High School varsity quarterback Austin Reed attended the 2016 Tampa Bay Area Quarterback Challenge held at the University of Tampa by the DeBartolo Sports University and the Kaleo QB Academy.  The Challenge included quarterbacks competing in their own grade for 8th – 11th graders in a series of technical tests that included drills measuring accuracy, long ball, escape throws, fade throws and a figure 8 footwork drill.  The quarterbacks had a great time measuring their skills, meeting their peers from schools all over Florida, and learning from a very talented group of coaches.

Quarterback Austin Reed attends weekly workout with Coach John Brantley III

This past week St. Augustine High School Jackets Varsity Quarterback Austin Reed traveled to Jervey Gantt Park in Ocala to work out with quarterback instructor and High School football coach John Brantley III.  John Brantley III is a former University of Florida quarterback and the father of former Gators quarterback John Brantley IV.  Coach Brantley is the only person in the State of Florida who has won state championships as a player, Assistant Coach, and Head Coach, and is a former Manning Passing Academy coach and Under Armor advisor.  Coach Brantley has recently accepted the Head Coach position for Belview High School (Ocala – Class 5A) after spending several years as the Head Coach for Trinity Catholic (Ocala), where he won two state championships and appeared in 2 other state championship finals.

In addition to Coach Brantley, former Purdue Quarterback Rob Henry provided valuable coaching at the passing camp.  The camp was made up of high school varsity quarterbacks and receivers from the surrounding Ocala area.  Austin participated in a number of game-play development drills and received excellent instructions in passing technique and body mechanics.

The St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets varsity team finishes up the 2015 football season:

This is the final football post for the 2015 St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets football team and quarterback Austin Reed’s (#14) first season as a sophomore player on the varsity team.  The Jackets closed out the year with a 66-28 win over their long time rivals the Palatka High School Panthers on November 6th.  The win gave the Jackets a 9-1 (3-1 district) record entering the Regional playoffs as the #2 seed team from District 6A-4.  The Regional quarterfinal playoff game took place on November 13th, at the Niceville High School Eagles football stadium.  The game resulted in a 20-3 loss for the Yellow Jackets ending their season to finish 9-2.

Serving as a back up quarterback to the Yellow Jackets starter, quarterback Austin Reed (14) had several opportunities of play time during the 12 games throughout the season, including the Kickoff Classic in late August.  Several of the drives that Austin quarterbacked resulted in additional scoring for the team, and a load of experience at the varsity level for him.  Austin was also brought in to hold the ball for the kicker on extra-points and field goal attempts during the Regional quarterfinal game.

The following video features passing highlights for Austin for the 2015 football season as a quarterback for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets.

The St. Augustine HS Yellow Jackets beat the Middleburg Mustangs 49-0 in District play:

On Friday (Oct. 30th), the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets football team played FHSAA District 4-6A opponent the Middleburg High School Mustangs at home in Brumley Stadium.  The Yellow Jackets dominated the first half of the game scoring on two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and two defensive interceptions that resulted in touchdown returns to finish the half at 42-0.

The second half of the game started with a running clock and quarterback Austin Reed, #14, leading the second team offense for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets.  The second team offense got the opportunity to run a balanced attack with a mix of rushing and passing plays.  After recovering a Mustangs fumble on their own 4 yard line, the Yellow Jackets offense took over and drove 96 yards for the final touchdown of the game and a 49-0 lead.  During this drive, Austin Reed, #14, went 2-2 passing, including passes of 33 yards to Karim Brown, #20, and 21 yards to Emerson Kabus, #82.  Austin finished the game going 3-5 passing for 67 yards.

With the 49-0 win, the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Varsity Football Team improves to 8-1 on the season and are ranked #9 this week in the FHSAA Associated Press – Class 6-A football rankings.  The next and final game of the season before playoffs is Friday (Nov. 6th) against the Palatka High School Panthers at home in Brumley Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets beat Baker County in the 2015 Season Opener:

On Friday, August 28th, the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Varsity Football team began their 2015 regular season at home against the Baker County Wildcats, in a game that experienced a one hour rain delay towards the end of the second half, due to a passing storm.  During the game, starting Jackets quarterback Cole Northrup connected with wide receiver David Kra for two touchdowns (23 and 27 yards) and ran for another on a QB sneak from the 1 yard line.  While running back Jarel James added another touchdown in the game on a 2 yard run.  Jahquise Russell ran for 176 yards in the game while kicker Brad Meeks went 1 for 2 kicking on field goals.

St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets backup quarterback Austin Reed, #14, made his regular season Varsity debut entering the game in the 4th quarter.  Starting the drive with two consecutive running plays, one for a loss of 5 yards, Austin and the Jackets were quickly faced with a 3rd down and 15 situation from the 50 yard line.  The third down conversion was successful as Austin completed a beautiful fade route to his receiver EJ Eldridge, #18, that picked up 23 yards and a Jackets first down.  The drive finally ended after 4 consecutive running plays failed to pick up a needed first down.  The Yellow Jackets went on to win the game by a final of 29-7 and start the season 1-0.  The next game for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets is away on Friday (9/4) against their cross town rivals, the Pedro Menendez High School Falcons.

Austin Reed gets his first Varsity football action in the 2015 Kickoff Classic:

On Friday (8/21) the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets opened their 2015 football season up with a pre-season game versus the Seabreeze High School Sandcrabs (Ormond Beach, FL) in their annual Kickoff Classic at the Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium.  This was the first game for Quarterback Austin Reed, #14, to play in since moving up from JV to the Varsity team as a sophomore over the Summer.  With the score already in favor of the Jackets 24-0 with only 4 1/2 minutes into the second half, Austin entered the game with several of the other Jackets 2nd team players.

Austin’s first drive resulted in a long TD run being called back from a penalty and a forced punt situation on 4th down.  The second drive featured a huge 10 yard pass from Austin to his wide receiver Emerson Kabus on 4th down and 6, to pick up the first down.  Later in the drive, Austin connected with his WR Emerson Kabus again on a fade route in the corner of the end-zone for a touchdown, only to have that called back due to an illegal man downfield penalty on the play.  After several run attempts and another barely missed pass attempt on a fade route to the end-zone, the Jackets settled for 3 points on the field goal.

The next game for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets football team is the official season and home opener against the Baker County High School Wildcats on Friday, August 28th, at Brumley Stadium in St. Augustine.

This week (July 27th – 30th) the St. Johns County Police Athletic League (PAL) held their annual Summer football camp for kids in grades ranging from 2nd grade through 8th grade.  The camp is being attended by over 120 kids who will be participating in the Police Athletic Leagues Fall junior development league (JDL) and Middle School League football programs held in St. Augustine.  Several former PAL football players and players from other associations who are now playing football at either St. Augustine High School, Pedro Menendez High School, or St. Joseph Academy were invited to volunteer to help coach at the four day camp.

St. Augustine High School varsity quarterback Austin Reed joined in with several of his Jackets teammates to help coach several skills stations on offense and defense at the camp, and coach an 8th grade team for the week long flag football tournament held at the end of camp each day.  Each of these volunteers earn 24 hours of volunteer service hours that are credited to their requirements at their respective schools.  Great job guys!
