The St. Augustine Yellow Jackets JV football team win their 3rd in a row against the Bartram Trails Bears

On Thursday, September 18th, the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Junior Varsity football team defeated the Bartram Trail Bears JV 12-6, in a very tough defensive game for both teams.  Controlling the ball for most of the first half of the game, the St. Augustine Jackets got the first touchdown on a short run by sophomore running back Martrell Story, #9.  The Jackets were without a kicker and had to try to convert extra points by running plays from scrimmage, instead kicking.  After missing the extra point play attempt, the Jackets led 6-0.  The Jackets continued the control of the ball in the second quarter and marched down the field with a strong running game led by Storey and Varius Woodard – #4, and a 22 yard pass from quarterback Austin Reed – #7, to Karim Brown – #8, to get the ball into scoring position inside the Bears 5 yard line.  Jackets quarterback Austin Reed – #7, hit his tight end on a pass running a bench route to increase the score to 12-0 to end the half.

The second half was dominated by both defenses after the Bartram Trail Bears established a time consuming opening drive in the third quarter and scored on a run to reduce the St. Augustine Jackets lead to 12-6.  The Jackets were unable to get any 2nd half points on offense, as the defense had to hold back the Bears offense on a late drive in the 4th quarter to win the game 12-6, and increase the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets JV record to 3-0 on the young season.  Quarterback Austin Reed – #7, completed 8 passes in the game for 85 yards and one touchdown.

The St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets (JV) football team improve to 2-0 with an impressive win.

On Thursday, September 11th, the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Junior Varsity football team traveled into Clay County to face the Ridgeview High School Panthers Junior Varsity football team from Orange Park.  Coming into the game, both teams were undefeated with the Panthers averaging 36 points per game on offense and allowing only 9 points per game on defense.  The Jackets scored touchdowns on their first two drives due to a strong running game from Martrell Storey and Varius Woodard and a very efficient passing game lead by quarterback Austin Reed, #7, to take a 14-0 lead.  The Jackets defense had to overcome several second quarter penalties and make a strong defensive stand on a Panthers 1st and goal from the Jackets 3 yard line to hold the Panthers to only a field goal in the first half.

The Ridgeview Panthers made the game close after a Jackets turnover resulted in a long Panthers drive for a touchdown to cut the Jackets lead to 14-10.  On the Jackets next possession, quarterback Austin Reed, #7, engineered a long, time consuming drive that ended in a 10 yard touchdown pass from Reed to Varius Woodard, #4, that increased the Jackets lead to 20-10.  The St. Augustine defense continued to perform well holding the Panthers on their last offensive drive.  Needing first downs to finish the game, the Jackets established a long drive, kept alive by two 20 yard passes to pick up first downs and run out the clock in the game for a St. Augustine Jackets 20-10 road win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Quarterback Austin Reed, #7, performed very well managing the offensive game and completing 72% of his passes (13-18) for 150 yards, 1 touchdown/1 interception .  Austin completed passes to 7 different receivers during the game including: Emerson Kabus, Varius Woodard, Deven Gray, Karim Brown, Martrell Storey, Tyrek Russ, and Daniel Peterson.  The next game for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets JV football team is Thursday, September 18th at St. Augustine High School Brumley Stadium for the JV Jackets 2014 home opener against the Bartram Trail High School Bears JV football team at 7:00 p.m.

On Thursday, September 4th, the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Junior Varsity Football Team began their 2014 regular season play against their local school rivals the Pedro Menendez High School Falcons.  Playing under the lights at Pedro Menendez Stadium, the Jackets quickly got out to a 21 – 0 first quarter lead due to a strong running game, setting up passing opportunities for the offense.  The Jackets finished the first half 28 -0 as the dominating Jackets defense kept the Falcons offense to several negative and no yardage drives.

The St. Augustine Jackets JV Football Team continued their offensive and defensive dominance throughout the game, including a great special teams play when the Jackets defense blocked the Falcons punt attempt, and freshman linebacker Buddy Rowe scooped it up and returned the blocked punt for a Jackets touchdown.  The only score for the Falcons offense came on their last offensive play of the game with a long run for a touchdown as the 4th quarter ended in a 48 – 7 win for the Yellow Jackets JV team.
