The St. Augustine HS Yellow Jackets beat Bartram Trail High School on a last second field goal

On Friday night (9/22) the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets football team played the highly rated Bartram Trail HS Bears (Florida Class 7A) and their two QB attacking offense with Joey Gatewood and Riley Smith, two of the highest publicized QB’s in the State of Florida.  The game was the first for the Yellow Jackets since Hurricane Irma put a hold on the season two weeks earlier.  That didn’t stop the Yellow Jackets from jumping out to a touchdown on their first drive of the game on the arm of Jackets QB – Austin Reed (#14) connecting to Karim Brown on a 22 yard TD.  The Jackets jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the 2nd quarter when Jackets defensive back Jaden McDowall intercepted a Riley Smith pass and returned it for a 70 yard touchdown.  The Bears quickly responded with a score of their own and brought  the game to a close 21-14 at the half.

The score remained 21-14 until the 4th quarter when the Bears took advantage of a strong run defense and slowed the Jackets.  They were able to score on two consecutive drives to lead the game 28-21 over the Jackets with less than 4 minutes left.  That’s when Jackets QB Austin Reed and the rest of the offensive passing game took off.  Taking the ball from the Jackets 30 yard line, Austin completed 2 passes out of 3, including a 59 yard touchdown to Karim Brown (his 3rd of the game) to tie the game at 28.  The Bears were unable to drive the ball to score or kill the clock to send the game into overtime, so they had to settle for a punt from their own 45 yard line.

The punt by the Bears was a good one that rolled to the Jackets 14 yard line where the Jackets had to start from with 29 seconds left.  The Jackets once again relied on QB Austin Reed and the Jackets passing game to get them down the field into field goal position.  Austin completed 3 straight passes of 11, 30 and 20 yards to get the Jackets to the Bears 25.  After a Bears penalty, the Jackets kicker Elijah Ryan attempted the field goal from 37 yards out and put it right down the middle to win the game 31-28 and improve the Jackets to 3-0 on the season and 19-0 all time over Bartram Trail.  The streak survives for another year!

St. Augustine High School Quarterback finished the game as the passing leader going 19-29, 373 yards and 3 TD’s in the win.  Next up for the SAHS Yellow Jackets are District opponent Englewood High School (Jacksonville).  Click HERE for quarterback Austin Reed’s passing highlights from the Bartram Trail game.

On Friday (8/21) the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets opened their 2015 football season up with a pre-season game versus the Seabreeze High School Sandcrabs (Ormond Beach, FL) in their annual Kickoff Classic at the Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium.  This was the first game for Quarterback Austin Reed, #14, to play in since moving up from JV to the Varsity team as a sophomore over the Summer.  With the score already in favor of the Jackets 24-0 with only 4 1/2 minutes into the second half, Austin entered the game with several of the other Jackets 2nd team players.

The St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets JV Football Team finish undefeated on the 2014 season

On Wednesday evening, October 22nd, The St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Junior Varsity Football Team proved their dominance in JV football in St. Johns County and their District by beating the Creekside High School Knights JV Football Team to finish out the season undefeated with a record of 8-0.  The game started with both teams trying to get on track as the first quarter expired with the score 0 – 0.  Early in the second quarter, Creekside scored first to take a 6-0 lead.  The Jackets quickly drove the length of the field on a strong running game but missed the extra point to tie the game at 6-6.  On the next Jackets drive, quarterback Austin Reed, #7, hit his wide receiver Karim Brown, #8, on a 63 yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful two point conversion run to take the lead 14-6.  The Jackets were unable to score on a late drive in the second quarter and ended the half leading 14-6.

The Creekside Knights came out and played tough in the second half and were able to score two more touchdowns on a very tricky offensive plan and a big play for a touch down on a fake punt.  However, the second half was mostly dominated by the Jackets offense, who were able to control the line of scrimmage and game clock when needed.  The Jackets added three more touchdowns in the half, including the first touchdown of the year for running back Fre Quan Sparrow, #25, late in the 4th quarter.  The game finished in a 35-20 win for the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets JV Football Team and the start of the post-game celebration for all of the boys.  Quarterback Austin Reed, #7, finished the game passing for 153 yard on 7 completions with one touchdown.

A great come from behind win improves the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets JV Football Team to 7-0

The seventh game for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets Junior Varsity football team was the most dramatic of all of the games so far this year.  The game featured the undefeated, 6-0 Jackets, playing their long time rivals the Palatka High School Panthers football team, 4-2, at home in Brumley Stadium.  It didn’t take long for the Panthers to score on their first possession when their QB hit an open receiver down the left side for a 25 yard TD pass.  The Jackets countered with a 39 yard touchdown pass from Austin Reed, #7, to his receiver Karim Brown, #8, on a fade route down the sideline to take the lead 7-7.  The Panthers added two more touchdown runs of 75 yards and 53 yards on their next two drives to take the lead 20-7.  The Jackets soon after found the Panthers end zone on a touchdown run by fullback Martrell Storey, #9, after establishing a long, ball controlled series on offense.  The Panthers returned to the end zone before the first half on a 50 yard touchdown pass down the middle of the Jackets defense to go up 27-14 at the end of the first half.

The second half of the game started with another score by the Panthers, this time by the defense, when Jackets quarterback Austin Reed, #7, was hit by an untouched blitzing linebacker as he went to throw the ball, resulting in a Panthers interception return for a TD to increase their lead to 34-14.  Soon after, the Jackets got all aspects of their game going as the defense came alive to stop the Panthers on each drive.  The Jackets offense added two rushing touchdowns and special teams added another on a kickoff by Nick Lawler, #15, to tie the game late in the 4th quarter at 34-34.  The Jackets defense held the Panthers on their next drive to a punt attempt, which was blocked and returned into the Panthers end zone by Josh Peterson, #22, for the Jackets.  The Jackets held on to their lead to finish the game out 41-34 and improve their season record to 7-0.

St. Augustine quarterback Austin Reed, #7, finished his seventh start of the season completing 10 passes for 192 yards and one touchdown.  The final game for the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets JV football team is a road game Wednesday, October 22nd against the Creekside High School Knights football team.

Austin Reed, #7 and his St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets football teammates win their homecoming game against Matanzas High School

On Thursday, October 8th, the St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets junior varsity football team played the Matanzas High School Pirates for their annual homecoming game at Brumley Stadium in St. Augustine.  Wearing their home maroon colored jerseys, the Jackets started the game moving the ball well on offense, but were unable to get any points on the board in the first quarter.  The Pirates defense scored on the Jackets first offensive play of the second quarter when their left defensive end stripped the Jackets running back of the football and returned it 25 yards for the first score of the game.

The St. Augustine High School Yellow Jackets football team got things going in the second quarter on the arm of quarterback Austin Reed, #7, who hit his wide receiver Karim Brown, #8, on a 63 yard post pattern down the middle of the field for a touchdown and a 7-6 lead.  The Jackets scored again in the quarter after a long drive put the Jackets on the Pirates 4 yard line and running back Martrel Storey, #9, ran off tackle to give the Jackets a 13-6 lead.  The final touchdown of the game came in the 3rd quarter when Karim Brown, #8, caught a quick turnaround pass from Austin and ran the ball 38 yards down the sideline for the final TD of the game and a 19-6 lead.  The defense played an excellent game shutting the Pirates offense down for their first shutout of the season and helping the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets football team to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Quarterback Austin Reed, #7, completed 9 of 18 passed for the game with 187 yards, 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.  The next game for the JV Jackets football team is their final home game on Thursday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m. against the Palatka High School Panthers.
